- Subject: New comment (2) on "LED Lighting - what is blocking adoption of the
technology?"
Price is a factor, but the greatest hurdle seems to be the resistance to this "new technology"
due to misinformation. Many people jumped on the LED bandwagon early on and got "burned". The
product did not provide the illumination they expected and many poorly designed products failed
prematurely due to inadequate heat-sinking. The "good" manufacturers are being painted with the
same brush as the ones who provided the bad product. Everyone can relate to problem
installations, but very few remember the good ones!
Education is a problem! Many of the people who are promoting LEDs do not have an adequate
understanding of their limitations and present them as the solution for all lighting
applications.
I constantly hear questions like "if this has a 100,000 hr life, why are they only offering a 1
year warranty"? and "I dont know anyone who stocks LEDs, so where do I get replacements when
they burn out"?
If the products where promoted correctly and the users and specifiers where being given the
correct information, I believe that solid state lighting would be adopted much more quickly.
